Department of Geophysics and Geology FMIPA UI

Profil > Departemen > Geofisika & Geologi

The Chancellor of the University of Indonesia received a mandate from the Director General of Higher Education through the Letter of the Acting Director General of Higher Education No. 358/E.E2/DT/2014 to organize 2 (two) S1 Study Programs directly related to earth sciences, namely the Geophysics Study Program and the Geology Study Program.

So in 2015, the two study programs were temporarily under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA). In the long-term plan, the two study programs will be part of a new department at FMIPA UI, namely the Department of Geosciences.

The government mandates that both study programs can meet the need for human resources who are able to manage natural resources sustainably and environmentally friendly, able to mitigate the potential for natural disasters whose frequency continues to increase, and able to develop geotourism potential as a form of preserving the uniqueness and diversity of earth phenomena in Indonesia. The need for geology and geophysics graduates by society and industry has been quite high. The development of exploration of conventional energy sources (such as oil, gas and coal) and non-conventional energy (such as CBM and shale gas) and renewable energy (such as geothermal) has encouraged the industry to need many earth science graduates such as geology and geophysics.

The Geophysics Study Program has a vision of "Becoming a leading Undergraduate Geophysics Study Program in the earth sciences field that is able to contribute to the development of Indonesian society and has a reputation at the Southeast Asian level" and the mission of (i) Carrying out quality Tridharma activities in the field of geophysics and relevant to national and global challenges, (ii) Producing quality, integrity, moral and socially sensitive Geophysics graduates who are able to compete at the national and global levels, (iii) Organizing the management of the Undergraduate Geophysics Study Program that is oriented towards quality and accountability to support the vision of FMIPA and the vision of the University of Indonesia.

The Undergraduate Geology Study Program completes the diversity of basic sciences in FMIPA and is expected to increase FMIPA UI's contribution in helping to solve problems encountered in national development in terms of regional development, utilization and management of geological resources buried in the earth of Indonesia.

The Geology Study Program has a vision of "Becoming a superior Geology Study Program and being able to play a role at the Southeast Asian level to advance earth science and sustainable development" and a mission of (i) Carrying out the Tridharma of Higher Education activities to produce graduates of the Geology Undergraduate Study Program as future leaders who are professional, intelligent, moral, have social sensitivity and are superior in competing globally, (ii) Developing an active learning atmosphere and current research in the field of geology to produce innovations and solutions that are beneficial to society and support national development and resilience, (iii) Providing contributions and active roles in the development of science and innovation in the field of geology.

The Department of Geosciences supports the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka Program of the Ministry of Education and Culture by opening online courses or Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that can be followed by students from within and outside the country. Currently, the Department of Geosciences has 22 permanent and non-permanent lecturers, with a composition of 1 Professor, 3 with Doctoral degrees and 18 with Masters degrees. https://geosciences.ui.ac.id/
