Profil > Departemen > Geografi

Judging from its history, the establishment of the Geography Department of FMIPA UI in the 1950s was pioneered by the Indonesian Army, in this case General Gatot Subroto, which was motivated by the desire to provide experts in map making and analysis for military purposes. Therefore, it is not surprising that since its inauguration on November 27, 1959, all lecture activities were held at the Geography Institute Building of the Indonesian Army Topography Service (Jantop) located on Jl. Dr. Wahidin No. 11, Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta before being moved to the UI Salemba Campus in 1976.

At that time, the study programs opened were only intended for undergraduate education. The number of students who registered in the first batch was more than 100 people. At that time, the Geography Department was under the management of the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences, Padjajaran University (FIPIA-Unpad) in Bandung. It was only in 1966 that the management of the Geography Department was transferred to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA - UI) based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture Number 79 dated October 8, 1966.

With the completion of the construction of the University of Indonesia Campus in Depok, West Java in 1987, the lecture activities and educational administration of the Geography Department were moved from Salemba to Depok. In 1998, the Department of Geography opened the Master of Geography Program. It has a vision of "as a Center of Excellence in Geography that is recognized nationally and is able to play an active role at the global level" and the mission of (i) organizing higher education activities in geography based on competence and research, (ii) organizing research activities for the development of applied science and research, (iii) organizing community service activities to improve the standard and quality of life of the Indonesian people and humanity, (iv) organizing the best service activities in the fields of education, research and community service.

The Undergraduate Geography Study Program and the Master of Geographical Science Study Program have obtained A accreditation from the National Accreditation Board - Higher Education (BAN-PT). In 2021, the Undergraduate Geography Study Program is in preparation for ASIIN international accreditation. The Department of Geography supports the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka Program of the Ministry of Education and Culture by opening online courses or Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) which can be attended by students from within and outside the country.
