The Department of Chemistry was established in 1960 (by Decree of the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, no. 108094/UU dated December 21, 1960). Admission of new students was carried out in September 1960 under the auspices of the Faculty of Exact Sciences and Natural Sciences-University of Indonesia (FIPIA-UI). The Department of Chemistry opened the Master of Chemistry (S2) program in 1993 (Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia NO.577/DIKTI/Kep/1993) and the Doctoral Program in Chemistry (S3) in 2001 (Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 77/DIKTI/Kep/2001).
Having a vision of "Becoming a center of excellence in chemical education and research, which is able to contribute to the development of science and technology at the national and international levels" and the mission of (i) producing graduates who can compete at the national and international levels and are able to adapt to changes and developments in science and technology, (ii) developing quality study programs and being able to play a role in the advancement of Chemistry and its applications, (iii) contributing to solving chemical problems in society, especially in urban areas.
The Bachelor and Master of Chemistry Study Programs have obtained A accreditation, while the Doctoral Study Program in Chemistry has received Excellent accreditation from the National Accreditation Board - Higher Education (BAN-PT). The Bachelor of Chemistry Study Program has been assessed at the ASEAN level through the ASEAN University Network - Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) and has received international accreditation from The Royal Society Chemistry (RSC). The Department of Chemistry supports the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka Program of the Ministry of Education and Culture by opening online courses or Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that can be followed by students from within and outside the country.
Supported by 31 permanent and non-permanent lecturers (6 Professors, 18 with Doctoral degrees, and 7 with Masters degrees), the Department of Chemistry, FMIPA UI can produce human resources who have the skills, abilities, and responsibilities as professional workers, scientists, and scholars in the field of chemistry. https://chem.ui.ac.id
